WHAT IS SHORT INTEREST?

Short interest is the number of shares that have been sold short but have not yet covered or closed out. Short interest can be expressed as a dollar value ($), number of shares (#) or percentage (% float). It is an indicator of market sentiment that tells whether institutional investors expect a stock’s price is likely to fall.

Short interest provides investors insight into the potential direction of an individual stock or how bullish or bearish investors are about the market overall. Stock exchanges measure and report on short interest, too. Typically, they issue reports every two weeks for the prior two-week period.

SHORTSIGHT powered by S3 is the only provider of real-time short interest data.

S3's analytics explained...

Market Sentiment Score shows the trend of recent buying and selling in a stock on a scale of 0 to 10. If the indicator shows a score of 0-4, there is more selling than buying; if the indicator shows a score of 6-10, there is more buying than selling.

Is this Being Shorted? Score measures the capacity for short positions to increase. If the indicator shows a score of 0-4, shorting will be limited due to few available shares for shorts to borrow; if the indicator shows a score of 6-10, there are shares available to increase short positions.

Bear / Bull Signal assists investors in understanding the data in SHORTSIGHT. The Bull / Bear Signal gives a cumulative score of the individual charts for any stock. A signal of 5 Bears indicates a very bearish trend. A signal of 5 Bulls indicates a very bullish trend. A signal of 1 Bear and 1 Bull is neutral.
